SHI Cryogenics Group is the leading supplier of 4K and 10K cryocooler technology to the medical diagnostics industry. Our success has been borne from providing leading-edge technology that offers repeatable reliability, coupled with a global support structure and exchange program.

Customers use cryogenic coolers in applications where they wish to eliminate or reduce the use of liquid cryogens. Our high-powered 10K cryocoolers, offering 110W @ 77K, are used in permanent magnet applications. For superconducting systems that utilize liquid helium, we offer an extensive range of 4.2K cryocoolers.

Cryocooler or Liquid Gas?

Helium as a commodity is becoming increasingly expensive, as a rare and diminishing natural resource. MRI and NMR manufacturers are constantly researching ways to ensure machines are user-friendly, while offering a lower cost of ownership. To this end, the trend is to replace liquid helium with mechanical coolers, which provide flexibility and ease of use by removing the need for helium refills. In applications where the external environment is demanding, such as rain forests and deserts, cryocoolers have allowed the use of superconducting magnets in such a hostile terrain.

The Next Generation

SHI Cryogenics Group is recognized as being at the forefront in the development of the next generation of shield coolers required for 21st century applications. Diagnostic system manufacturers continue to develop systems that provide a uniform or homogeneous magnet field of both strength and stability for high quality imaging. In parallel SHI Cryogenics Group is utilizing expertise gained from many years working in collaboration with system manufacturers to improve the existing Gifford-McMahon technology along with the introduction of the latest advances in 4K Pulse Tube technology.
